About this day out

Wortley Top Forge is the oldest surviving heavy iron forge in the world, a water-powered heavy iron forge with history traced back to at least 1640 and best known for wrought iron railway axles hammer-welded between 1840 and closing around 1910. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Industrial Museum with original water wheels, water-powered drop hammers, a 1900s Machine Shop, and steam engines including the 1897 'Elizabeth'. The site includes working exhibits and an adjoining 1750s building.
