Tintern Abbey is a roofless Cistercian abbey founded in 1131 on the banks of the River Wye, widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of British Gothic architecture. Its great west front with a seven-lancet window and soaring nave arches survive from the 13th-century rebuild, and the site became a celebrated Romantic ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536.
