About this day out
Clearwell Caves is an ancient natural cave system beneath the Royal Forest of Dean, mined for iron ore and ochre pigments over thousands of years. Visitors walk through ten impressive caverns descending around 100 ft underground with displays throughout. The site has been used as a filming location for productions including The Winter King, Willow, Doctor Who, and His Dark Materials.

Opening calendar
Open on bookable dates shown on the online booking calendar; normally closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Café closes around 4:00 pm; last entry 3:30 pm; caves close after last visitors finish at their own pace.

- Real mine workings with steep, uneven, and sometimes wet pathways; handrails in steeper areas. Not suitable for those with walking difficulties. Single buggy allowed but wheelchairs, double buggies, mobility scooters, and heavier electric wheelchairs cannot access the caves. Disabled parking and access available near the café and gift shop.
