Chepstow Castle is a clifftop fortress above the River Wye tracing over 900 years of history, begun in 1067 by William fitz Osbern as one of the first Norman strongholds in Wales. It showcases the evolution of castle design in response to increasingly destructive weaponry and the ambitions of its medieval and Tudor owners.

1 Mar–30 Jun 9.30am–5pm; 1 Jul–31 Aug 9.30am–6pm; 1 Nov–28 Feb 10am–4pm. Last admission 30 min before closing. Closed 24–26 Dec and 1 Jan.

Accessibility

Terrain Level 3 (Moderate). Steep slope from car park; several steps to upper areas and wall walks. Uneven surfaces, gravel paths and cobbles challenging for mobility scooters. Portable induction loop available. Access guide available online.
